eSIM Not Working? How to Fix the Most Common Problems

If your travel eSIM isn't working, the fix is almost always one of four things: the wrong line is set for Cellular Data, data roaming is off on the eSIM, the profile never finished installing, or you're still on Airplane Mode. Work through the checklist below in order — most trips are back online in under five minutes.

First: identify the symptom

No data after landing

1. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, then off — this forces the phone to reattach to a network.
2. Confirm Cellular Data (iPhone) or Mobile data (Android) is set to the travel eSIM, not your home line.
3. Restart the phone once if step 1–2 don't fix it.
4. Confirm you're actually in the country or region the plan covers — a Europe regional plan bought for one set of countries won't work in a country outside that list.

Install never completed

• Reconnect to stable Wi‑Fi and retry the QR scan — installs commonly fail on weak airport Wi‑Fi.
• Check the QR hasn't already been used on another device; each profile is normally single-device and single-use for installation.
• Use manual entry (SM-DP+ address and activation code, shown in your PingRoam dashboard) if the camera scan keeps failing.
• If the install still won't complete, contact support@pingroam.com with your order number — do not share your QR code or account password with anyone else.

Signal but no internet

This is almost always a Data Roaming setting on the eSIM line specifically:

• iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap the travel eSIM line → enable Data Roaming.
• Android: Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → SIM manager → select the eSIM → enable Roaming or Data roaming.

Slow speeds

• Confirm you bought the plan for the correct country or region — a mismatched plan can fall back to weak partner coverage.
• Toggle Airplane Mode or restart once to force a fresh network attach.
• Dense city centers, stadiums, and transit hubs get congested at peak times on any network, not just eSIM.
• Check that automatic cloud backup or app updates aren't running in the background and consuming bandwidth.

Still using home data instead of the eSIM

• iPhone: Settings → Cellular → turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, which can silently flip data back to your home line.
• Android: check the preferred SIM for Mobile data in SIM manager — some phones default back to the physical SIM after a restart.

When to contact support

FAQ

Why does my eSIM work in one city but not another?

Coverage runs on partner networks that vary by location. If a rural area or specific building has weak signal, that's a network limitation rather than a broken eSIM — download offline maps as backup.

I restarted my phone and now data is on my home SIM. Why?

Some phones reset preferred-data settings after a restart, or "smart" dual SIM features intervene. Manually reselect the travel eSIM for Cellular/Mobile data each time this happens.

Can I reinstall an eSIM that failed halfway through?

Usually yes, once on stable Wi‑Fi — most failed installs simply need a retry. If the profile shows as already used, contact support for a reissue.

Does deleting and reinstalling fix most issues?

Rarely necessary. Toggling Airplane Mode and checking Cellular Data / Data Roaming settings resolves the majority of cases without reinstalling anything.
